Dear 5th Grade Families,
We are excited to begin a new school year with this amazing group of 5th grade student leaders! We want to take a moment to inform you of some important information about the 2015-16 school year.
In 5th grade students move through three academic blocks during the morning. Your students will receive reading instruction from Ms. Edwards, math instruction from Mr. Hines, and writing instruction from Mr. Flancbaum. Teachers are content specialists while closely collaborating with the other fifth grade teachers. Students will be in a variety of different groupings throughout the year based on their needs. Your child will receive the same IB-integrated curriculum that your students have become familiar with throughout their years at Brown International Academy.
Each student will be issued a student planner which will be used to communicate with parents and keep track of assignments. Planners should be reviewed and signed nightly by a parent or guardian. It is your child’s responsibility to ensure that the planner is signed. Students will miss their refocus recess (extra recess) when planners are unsigned. Teachers will be checking these planners every day and will be using them to communicate with you about your child.
Our homework policy will involve packets that will include homework from each subject. Students will receive their packets on Fridays and will be expected to return them back to their homeroom teacher by the following Friday. Along with the packets, students will be completing several at-home inquiry projects throughout the year.
As mornings can be long in 5th grade, most students like to have a snack during class. Students can bring a healthy snack to be enjoyed during morning instruction. Teachers or parents will not be providing snacks for the whole class; this snack is only for your child. Please do not send your child with anything to drink other than water. Students will be allowed to have water bottles with them at all times.
Your main communication will be through your student's homeroom teacher. Check out your teacher's website above.
We are looking forward to a great year of working together for our students!
